§ Mr. MellorFor the prison service, consideration is being given to a further statistical survey of ethnic origin, by grade, on broadly similar lines to that proposed for the probation service. Home Office circular 87/1989—"Equal Opportunities Policies in the Police Service"—recommended that ethnic monitoring arrangements should be established for police officers. Her Majesty's inspectorate of constabulary is monitoring the information provided in response to that recommendation.
