§ Ms. WalleyTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will identify those landfill sites which his Department considers represent a threat to the environment; what remedial action is required; and what action he is taking to ensure the safety of these sites.
§ Mr. Heathcoat-AmoryResponsibility for assessing environmental threats associated with individual landfill sites rests with the appropriate waste disposal authorities, working in conjunction with the National Rivers Authority and Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution. It is for the authorities concerned to decide upon appropriate remedial action in each case. For the particular problem of landfill gas, the Government have made special provision of £33 million in the form of supplementary credit approvals for 1990–91, to allow authorities to undertake remedial work on those sites where problems have been identified.
