HC Deb 15 May 1990 vol 172 c376W
1989. Mr. Simon Coombs

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his estimate of the number of foreign nationals who came to the United Kingdom to study English through language schools in(a) 1979, (b) 1984 and (c)

Mr. Peter Lloyd

The information is not available in the form requested. However, the international passenger survey results for 1984 showed that there were an estimated 477,000 visits to the United Kingdom by foreign residents who attended an English language course. It is not known what proportion of these studied at language schools. Respondents holding passports from the main English-speaking countries were not asked about their attendance on English language courses.
