HC Deb 08 May 1990 vol 172 cc37-8W
33. Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations he has received regarding teacher shortages in mathematics, science and technology.

Mr. Alan Howarth

My right hon. Friend and I have received a number of representations about teacher shortages in these subjects and more generally. We shall continue to monitor the situation and to take the action necessary to ensure an adequate supply of teachers.

37. Mr. Ian Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what plans he has to meet leaders of the teaching unions to discuss ways of reducing the problem of teacher shortages in the south-east.

Mr. Alan Howarth

My right hon. Friend meets representatives of the various teacher unions from time to time to discuss a wide range of concerns in education. He will be addressing the annual conference of the National Association of Headteachers next month.

41. Miss Hoey

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will set out his latest estimate of teacher shortages in inner London.

Mrs. Rumbold

The Inner London education authority estimated in March that there were 200 uncovered teacher vacancies in inner London. These posts were being filled by the use of supply teachers and by other short-term measures.

The new inner London education authorities are taking steps to improve teacher supply in inner London. My right hon. Friend is supporting their efforts and will continue to monitor the position.
