HC Deb 08 May 1990 vol 172 c54W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on the testing and assessment of children in Wales concerning the national curriculum.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

The Secretary of State for Education and Science and the Secretary of State for Wales wrote to the Chairman of the School Examinations and Assessment Council on 6 March and 9 April setting out the Government's views on the arrangements for assessing pupils at age seven, 11 and 14. Copies of this correspondence are available in the Library of the House.

At age 16, the main instrument of assessment will be the GCSE. Decisions on the arrangements to assess music, art and physical education will be made at a later date.
