HC Deb 08 May 1990 vol 172 c39W
45. Mr. Gerald Bowden

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the role his Department is taking in the fight against drug abuse by young people.

Mr. Alan Howarth

Under the national curriculum, all maintained schools in England are now required to provide education about drug misuse. In 1990–91 the Department is supporting a £7 million programme of LEA expenditure on preventive health education. This will include education about drugs. The Department has also funded the development of curriculum materials for use in schools, and has issued bulk copies of a fact sheet on the drug "crack" to be used in the light of local circumstances.
