Mr. Patchett

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what are the figures for the spending by his Department on(a) newspaper advertising, (b) radio advertising, (c) television advertising, and (d) all other promotional material relating to the community charge proposals (i) since its inception and (ii) in each respective year; what is his latest estimate for the current year; and what is the budget for 1990–91.

There has been no newspaper, radio or television advertising of community charge benefit in the 1988–89 or 1989–90 years by the Department.

The costs of promotional material in 1988–89 was £34,817 and in 1989–90 was £75, 682,

There will be a press campaign publicising the importance of claiming community charge benefit starting on 6 May. The total budget for 1990–91 is £750,000.
