To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what are his best estimates of the amount that will be saved in community charge benefit through the operation of the community charge transitional relief scheme.

[holding answer 19 March 1990]: The community charge transitional relief scheme will reduce the total cost of community charge benefit by around £100 million to £2.5 billion on a full year basis and at 1990–91 benefit levels and prices.
