Mr. Hinchliffe

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proposals he has regarding the curriculum for 16 to 19-year-olds.

Mrs. Rumbold

The Government are actively considering improvements to the curriculum for 16 to 19-year-olds. My right hon. Friend commissioned work in November 1989 from the National Curriculum Council (NCC) and the Schools Examinations and Assessment Council (SEAC) on the core skills which should be included in the programmes of study of 16 to 19-year-olds taking A and AS levels. He recently received a report from the NCC, which he is now considering, and will announce his conclusions shortly.
