To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) why it has been decided to leave in situ the shells of the buildings of the old whaling station in South Georgia; and if he will make a statement;

(2) what steps have been taken to remove wastes from the old whaling station on South Georgia; and if he will make a statement.

Following discussions between the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the leaseholders, Christian Salvesen plc, work is currently under way to clear up one of the stations. Further decisions will be taken following the completion of this year's work programme.
