§ 60. Mr. Teddy TaylorTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his estimate of the total number of citizens of Macao who will be entitled to settle in the United Kingdom; and what is the scope of dependants and relatives who will be permitted to join such persons.
§ Mr. Peter LloydI understand that, under Portuguese law, about 90,000 residents of Macao are entitled to Portuguese nationality. Under European Community law a national of a member state is entitled to enter and reside in any other member state for the purpose of exercising rights conferred by the treaty of Rome. In the case of Portuguese nationals, however, these rights do not include the right to take employment in this country until 1 January 1993. A person exercising treaty rights is entitled to be accompanied by his or her spouse, descendants under 21 years of age and dependants in the ascending and descending lines.
