26. Mr. Irvine

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what percentage of seizures of cocaine, in the most recent years for which figures are available, was of cocaine entering the United Kingdom from member states of the European Community.

Mr. Mellor

Of the total amount of cocaine seized by Customs in 1989, some 64 per cent. by weight—equivalent to 267 kgs—was known to have been consigned from or routed through other member states of the European Community. These are provisional figures.

The corresponding final figures for 1988 and 1987 are 36 and 24 per cent. respectively.
