§ Mr. LangThe provision of apprenticeships is a matter for industry and in particular for industry lead training bodies such as the construction industry training board. In recent years the number of apprenticeships based on time serving has decreased as industry has moved towards flexible training systems for young people. Such schemes 581W operate in conjunction with youth training and are based on the achievement of standards of competence. This shift of emphasis is welcome as it encourages the rapid attainment of skills by trainees.
