HL Deb 01 May 1990 vol 518 c1029WA
Baroness Nicol

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will state the number of representations which have been made by members of both Houses concerning their proposal to reorganise the Nature Conservancy Council and the Countryside Commission.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of the Environment (Lord Hesketh)

The Government has receive a ranged of representations from members of both Houses about this proposal. These include more than 500 letters from Members of another place enclosing correspondence which they have received from their constituents.

Baroness Nicol

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in light of the public opposition to their decision to reorganise the Nature Conservancy Council, they will withdraw its proposals from the Environmental Protection Bill and publish revised plans in their forthcoming environmental white paper.

Lord Hesketh

There is considerable support for the Government's proposals to make the delivery of nature conservation services more sensitive to local needs. We have no intention of withdrawing them from the Environmental Protection Bill.
