§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonThe Scottish Development Department carried out a pilot survey of vacant land in Scotland in 1988 in collaboration with the Scottish Development Agency and the regional and district councils. This initial survey revealed 48 sites, comprising 402 hectares, that were known to be contaminated and a further 189 sites, comprising 834 hectares, that were suspected of contamination. A follow-up survey will be carried out shortly.
