HC Deb 30 March 1990 vol 170 c369W
Mr. Robin Cook

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will give the fee charged to non-National Health Service hospitals for handling each unit of blood for each year since 1982.

Mr. Freeman

Handling charges for whole blood supplied to non-National Health Service hospitals were introduced on 1 April 1984. The charges do not include any element for the blood itself, which is donated free of charge to the National Blood Transfusion Service for use where it is needed.

Charges for each year from 1984–85 to 1989–90 are given in the table:

1 April to 31 March Per unit of whole blood £
1984–85 19.75
