To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is his estimate of the number of agency nurses employed in the National Health Service.

§ Mrs. Virginia Bottomley
The number of agency nursing and midwifery staff (whole-time equivalent) employed in the National Health Service in England at 30 September 1988, the latest date for which figures are available, was 6,240.
