HC Deb 29 March 1990 vol 170 c304W
18. Mr. Skinner

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what recent discussions he has had with representatives of Eire regarding the Anglo-Irish Agreement; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brooke

I last met Ministers from the Republic of Ireland at the Anglo-lrish Intergovernmental Conference meeting on 2 March. The two Governments remain committed to the Agreement and the principles it embodies.

30. Mr. John D. Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the status of Northern Ireland as embodied in the Anglo-Irish Agreement.

Mr. Brooke

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. The Governments of the United Kingdom and of the Republic of Ireland affirm in article 1 of the Anglo-Irish Agreement that any change in the status of Northern Ireland would only come about with the consent of a majority of the people in Northern Ireland and recognise that the present wish of a majority is for no change in that status.
