HC Deb 27 March 1990 vol 170 cc167-8W
14. Mr. Hind

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the number of schools to date which have elected to become direct grant-maintained.

Mr. MacGregor

Ballots have been held at 84 schools. Parents at 64 schools have so far voted in favour of proceeding with an application for grant-maintained status. I have approved 34 of the 46 proposals for grant-maintained status which have so far reached me for a decision.

66. Mr. Murphy

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will make a statement on the guidelines for approval of grant-maintained status for schools.

Mrs. Rumbold

I refer the hon. Member to my right hon. Friend's reply to the hon. Member for Pontefract and Castleford (Mr. Lofthouse) earlier today.
