HL Deb 26 March 1990 vol 517 cc727-8WA
Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the word "maintenance" in the Long Title of the Education (Student Loans) Bill should be construed as including provision for equipment.

Baroness Blatch

In the context of the Education (Student Loans) Bill, the maintenance of a student encompasses all of the expenses which are necessary to his or her existence as a student. This takes into account his or her need to spend on not only board and lodging, but also books, equipment, and travel expenses attributable to his or her attendance on the course.
