How many people in the headquarters of the Department of the Environment are now working full time on historic buildings, ancient monuments, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and related matters, and how many were there before English Heritage was hived off from the department.

The total number of people in the headquarters of the Department of the Environment working full time on historic buildings, ancient monuments and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty was 43 on 1st March.

Before English Heritage was hived off from the Department on 1st April 1984, around 210 people were engaged in work on historic buildings and ancient monuments, including the Ancient Monuments and Historic Buildings Inspectorate (IAMHB), which is now part of English Heritage.
