HC Deb 22 March 1990 vol 169 c724W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Meirionnydd Nant Conwy of 6 March,Official Report, column 580, if he will give details of the letter he received from the Soviet Health Minister; and what was his response.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The Soviet Health Minister, Mr. E. Chazov, sent a letter which suggested that nuclear weapons testing posed a threat to life and health, and called for a test ban. I replied, among other things, that these tests posed no danger to public health and that as we wish to retain a nuclear deterrent, we should have to retain weapons testing.
