HC Deb 22 March 1990 vol 169 cc753-4W
76. Ms. Quin

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has any new proposals on prison conditions in the light of Mr. Stewart Fisher's report on Lewes gaol.

Mr. Mellor

We have already announced an increase of £80 million in the prison refurbishment programme for 1990–91, bringing the total available in that year to £120 million. The additional funding will allow for essential health, safety and security measures to be carried out, particularly in kitchens. In all, £400 million will be provided over the next three years to improve prison conditions.

At Her Majesty's prison Lewes, capital expenditure of £2.6 million is already planned for the provision of a new kitchen and reception area, and an extension to the hospital.
