HC Deb 21 March 1990 vol 169 c648W
115. Mr. Gerald Bowden

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what consideration he has given to the need for environmental measures to mitigate the effect of increased volume of traffic on roads in residential areas.

Mr. Atkins

Where there is sufficient capacity on main roads, traffic-calming measures such as road humps arid variable carriageway widths can play a useful part in enhancing the environmental quality of many residential streets. Their principal effects are to lower traffic speeds and to deter through traffic from using these streets. Improved landscaping and paved surfaces can offer further environmental benefits.
