HC Deb 21 March 1990 vol 169 c625W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what innovations he intends to introduce to increase the number of children receiving tuition in modern languages.

Mrs. Rumbold

The national curriculum includes a modern foreign language as a foundation subject at secondary level. That means that a modern foreign language will be studied by all pupils between the ages of 11 and 16 in maintained schools in England and Wales.

Mrs. Gorman

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what recent representations he has received from the business community regarding the teaching of foreign languages in schools.

Mrs. Rumbold

My right hon. Friend has received no such representations.
