To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the amount of grants made by the Government for home improvements over the past 10 years.

Mr. Chope

During the financial years 1981–82 to 1988–89, the Government provided £2,898 million in Exchequer subsidy to local authorities in England towards their expenditure on home improvement grants. Information for years prior to 1981–82 is not available.
