HC Deb 21 March 1990 vol 169 c675W
66. Ms. Primarolo

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he has any plans to allocate further subsidy to local authorities to prevent local authorities from increasing rents to meet their housing benefit responsibilities.

Mr. Chope

No. No local authority has to increase rents to meet housing benefit responsibilities.

Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he has developed any proposals to bring local authority rent increases into line with his Department's latest rent guidelines.

Mr. Michael Spicer

It is for local authorities to determine the rents they set for council housing. Rent increases can stay within the housing revenue account subsidy guidelines if authorities so wish.
