To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he has any plans to introduce legislation to give mandatory rating relief for local sports clubs.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he has commissioned any studies into the effects on local sports clubs of the uniform business rate.

I refer the hon. and learned Member to the answer which I gave on 19 March to my hon. Friend the Member for Basildon (Mr. Amess).

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he proposes to issue advice to local authorities as to how they should exercise their discretion to give rating relief to local sports clubs.

Mr. Chope

A practice note on the operation of discretionary rate relief, which included suggested criteria for use by local authorities in considering applications for relief, was issued to authorities in England and Wales in November 1989. A copy is in the Library.
