To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what percentage of gross earnings value added tax took up for a family on average male earnings with two children in 1978–79 and 1989–90.

Mr. Ryder

Approximately 2.7 per cent. and 5.0 per cent. respectively. Over the same period his real take-home pay has risen by 32 per cent.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many new businesses have registered for value added tax in the latest year for which figures are available.

Mr. Ryder

The number of new VAT registrations processed by Her Majesty's Customs and Excise in the calendar year was 261,783. This represents a 50 per cent. increase over 1980.

Mr. Ryder

A family consisting of a married man on average male earnings, his wife and two children would have paid approximately 2.7 per cent. of gross earnings in VAT in 1978–79 and will pay about 5.0 per cent. in 1989–90. Over the same period his real take-home pay has risen by 32 per cent.
