HC Deb 12 March 1990 vol 169 cc63-4W
Mr. William Powell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what current development assistance Britain provides to Uganda; and whether he will make a statement.

Mrs. Chalker

In 1988, the latest year for which firm figures are available, we provided £28.6 million in bilateral aid to Uganda, in addition to our share of assistance from multilateral agencies. During my visit to Uganda last week, I announced that the £10 million balance of payments assistance pledged in 1989 in support of Uganda's economic recovery programme would be increased to £15 million. This brings our total commitments since 1986 to over £155 million, including £53 million in balance of payments support.
