HC Deb 12 March 1990 vol 169 cc31-2W
Mr. Dobson

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what are the latest figures for the number of staff presently employed, and the full complement of staff, including vacant posts, by grade, in the statistical divisions in his Department; if he will differentiate between staff in statistical posts and staff in administration posts; and if he will give the staffing complements by grade, and differentiated between statistical and administrative posts, proposed for 1990–91.

Mrs. Rumbold

The current number of staff in post and the total number of posts, including vacancies, is as follows:

Staff in post Total posts (including vacancies)
Statistical Posts
Grade 3 (Director of Statistics) 1 1
Grade 5 (Chief Statistician) 2 2
Grade 7 (Statistician) 8 9
Grade 7 (Principal Research Officer) 1 1
Senior Assistant Statistician 4 4
Assistant Statistician 2 3
Administrative Posts
Senior Executive Officer 1 1
Higher Executive Officer 11 11
Executive Officer 14 14
Administrative Officer 6 9
Administrative Assistant 2 2
Personal Secretary 3 3
Typist 0.6 0.6
Total 55.6 60.6

No decision has been reached on what, if any, changes there should be in the staffing structure in 1990–91.

The difference between last year's figures and the figures shown in the table is due to the fact that during the year 61 posts from statistics branch in Darlington (mainly concerned with data processing functions) were transferred to information systems branch.
