Mr. Norman Hogg

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) if the salaries paid to the chairmen, deputy chairmen, and board members of new town development corporations are intended solely as payment for attendance at board meetings; and if he will make a statement;

(2) what are the duties and responsibilities of persons appointed to serve on the boards of new town development corporations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lang

Salaries paid to the chairman, deputy chairman and board members of new town development corporations are not intended solely as payment for attendance at board meetings.

The task of a new town development corporation is to undertake the planning and development of the new town; to provide the wide range of facilities required, including housing, industrial and commercial development; and to co-ordinate action with the local authorities responsible for various services. Board members are appointed on a part-time basis under the provisions of the New Towns (Scotland) Act 1968 and receive remuneration in accordance with the provisions of the Act. Their duties involve attendance at corporation meetings, which are normally held monthly, and such other tasks, for example as chairman or member of internal committees or as representatives of the corporation in public as may from time to time be required. Most board members participate willingly in a range of such tasks.
