HC Deb 12 March 1990 vol 169 c34W
Mr. Matthew Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will reconsider his decision to close the Bristol laboratory of the Institute of Food Research.

Mr. Jackson

The decision to restructure the Institute of Food Research was taken by the Agricultural and Food Research Council, an independent body established by royal charter.

Mr. Matthew Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science when the purpose-built abattoir at the Bristol laboratory of the Institute of Food Research was built; how much it cost; and if such an abattoir will be rebuilt following the closure of the laboratory.

Mr. Jackson

The carcase and abattoir facilities at the Bristol laboratory of the Agricultural and Food Research Council's Institute of Food Research were constructed between 1966 and 1968 and fully equipped. The cost was in the region of £200,000. The future of the abattoir is under consideration.
