Ms. Short

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security, by region, how many 16 and 17-year-olds had made applications for income support on grounds of extreme hardship; how many had been granted at 10 November 1989, 8 December 1989, 5 January 1990 and 9 February 1990; and how many at the same dates had been granted income support on grounds of being within exempted categories, shown by category.

The cumulative totals of the number of 16 and 17-year-olds who had made an application for income support on the grounds of severe hardship and the number granted benefit on this basis at 10 November 1989, 8 December 1989, 5 January 1990 and 9 February 1990 are in table A.

Figures for the number of 16 and 17-year-olds granted income support on the grounds of being within exempted categories are collected on a monthly basis and are, therefore, not available for the particular dates requested.
