HC Deb 12 March 1990 vol 169 c52W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many different types of red alert hospitals operate; and what each one represents.

Mr. Freeman

Red alert is a term used by some health authorities usually to indicate a situation where a hospital is able to accept only emergency admissions, for example, because of a flu epidemic. Whether to operate a red alert system and in what circumstances are matters for local determination.
