HL Deb 12 March 1990 vol 516 c1454WA
Lord Brougham and Vaux

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What research projects have been initiated following the recommendations of the Road Traffic Law Review; and

Whether any research is under way to ascertain the frequency of driving whilst disqualified, as recommended by the Road Traffic Law Review.

Viscount Davidson

In collaboration with the Home Office, which is investigating the technical aspects of camera technology, we are monitoring the effects on driver behaviour of cameras at traffic lights. The Department's behavioural studies programme also contains a project to investigate the way in which drivers take decisions at traffic lights. We are studying existing rehabilitation schemes for drink-drivers in preparation for the major experiment recommended by the North Review. Research to investigate the level of driving while disqualified is in hand. Provision has also been made in the research programme to assess the effects of retesting and the expanded high risk offender scheme.
