To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many cases of dementia in any form there were in(a) Scotland, (b) Strathclyde and (c) Greater Glasgow for each year since 1979.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what studies his Department has carried out or sponsored about the problem of dementia in Scotland since 1979.

[holding answer 9 March 1990]: The chief scientist office of the Scottish Office has, since 1979, sponsored the following studies on dementia: An image analysing computer study of human cerebral cortex with special reference to parenthymatous senile dementia. An investigation into the effectiveness of a reality orientation programme in a psychogeriatric day hospital. A study of some problems associated with the evaluation of a psychogeriatric day hospital. Changes in the cell population of the cerebral cortex in old age and senile dementia investigated by automated image-analysis. A comparative community study of dementia in the elderly An evaluation of two approaches to the care of the elderly patient with dementia in a psychiatric hospital: a high stimulation environment compared to a traditional environment. A search for pre-clinical Alzheimer's Disease: a quantitive study of neurofibrillary tangle formation nerve cell loss and aluminium accumulation in an unselected necropsy population.
