§ Mr. Redwood[holding answer 26 February 1990]: Figures are not compiled within the Government of all takeovers of companies in each country throughout the European Economic Community. Information is cornpiledd for United Kingdom takeover activity and published quarterly by the Central Statistical Office in Business Bulletin "Cross Border Acquisitions and Mergers". The latest publication includes information to the third quarter of 1989 and is available in the Library.
The report on barriers to takeovers in the European Community prepared for the Department of Trade and Industry and published recently indicates that in 1988 73 per cent. of acquisitions in the European Community took place in the United Kingdom.
