To ask the Minister for the Arts what is the total of expenditure per capita on public libraries in England and Wales.

Mr. Luce

Expenditure per capita on public libraries in England, for which I am responsible, was £9.87 in 1988–89. Libraries in Wales are the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
