Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will provide a breakdown of the current ivory stocks in Hong Kong according to weight and origin; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Waldegrave

[holding answer 15 February 1990]: The Hong Kong Government's records do not provide a breakdown of the current ivory stocks according to weight and country of origin. However, CITES certificates show that stocks originated from the following countries:

  • Botswana, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zaire, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

The total weight of these stocks is 254 tonnes of raw ivory and 104 tonnes of worked ivory.
