HC Deb 05 March 1990 vol 168 cc517-8W
Mr. Fearn

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport when he last travelled officially on a rush hour commuter train; and what assessment he made of the level of service offered and the conditions provided for commuters.

Mr. Portillo

[holding answer 28 February 1990]: The last such journey undertaken by my right hon. Friend was on the Central line on 18 January. The service was quick and on time, but the train was very crowded. London Underground's £720 million programme of investment will increase the peak capacity of this line by 16 per cent., to the considerable benefit of those who use it regularly.
