HC Deb 05 March 1990 vol 168 c487W
Mr. David Porter

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement about the incineration of chemical wastes at sea.

Mr. Gummer

At the 1987 North sea ministerial conference it was agreed that marine incineration should be phased out by 31 December 1994 as alternative means of dealing with the wastes concerned were becoming available. Land-based incineration facilities capable of dealing with the United Kingdom wastes which are currently burnt at sea are now being developed. I have therefore decided that no more United Kingdom waste will be licensed for marine incineration after the end of this year.
