HL Deb 01 March 1990 vol 516 c962WA
Lord Lyell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What plans they have for the tape-recording of interviews with suspected terrorists.

Viscount Ullswater

Tape-recording of summaries of interviews with suspected terrorists, and of their comments on the summary, is to be introduced on an experimental basis by the Metropolitan and Merseyside Police from Monday 5th March. The experiment will run for two years and will be monitored by the Research and Planning Unit of the Home Office, reporting to a steering committee which includes representatives of the police, the Crown Prosecution Service, the Criminal Bar Association and the Law Society. A copy of the relevant notes of guidance has been placed in the Library.
