To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many teachers and pupils are currently in Northern Ireland schools; what were the comparable figures for five, 10 and 15 years ago; and if he will make a statement.

In 1988, the latest year for which information is available, there were 18,491 teachers and 339,741 pupils.

The comparable figures for five, 10 and 15 years age, for teachers and pupils respectively, were 18,887 and 352,557; 19.116 and 372,380; 15,983 and 358,801.
