§ Mr. Andrew WelshTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will take steps to compensate fishermen for losses resulting from the shellfish ban.
§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonNo ban was imposed. The Government issued a warning to the public on 26 May that consumption of locally caught shellfish taken from the coast between Montrose and the Humber could cause illness. The risk arose from a natural cause and the Government acted to safeguard public health. In such circumstances compensation would not be appropriate.
