HC Deb 20 June 1990 vol 174 c615W
Mr. French

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) how many representations he has received concerning the rents into mortgages scheme; how many were(a) in favour and (b) against the scheme; how many of these representations are from (i) individuals, (ii) organisations and (iii) local authorities; and if he will make a statement;

(2) when he expects the rents into mortgages experiment to be completed; and if he will make a statement.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

I have had no formal representations about this scheme since I first announced it in May 1989.

Scottish Homes was asked to introduce the scheme on an experimental basis for a trial three-year period beginning in October 1989. This arrangement still stands. During its first eight months of operation, Scottish Homes has received 154 firm applications to purchase. The scheme is being closely monitored and early indications are that it is attracting the interest of the intended target group and others.

Any extension or modification to the scheme which appears appropriate in the light of experience will be introduced as soon as practicable.
