HC Deb 20 June 1990 vol 174 c593W
77. Mr. Fisher

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what assurance he has sought from the European Commission that legislation concerning the flammability of furniture and furnishings will meet the highest safety standards for British consumers.

109. Mr. Ted Garrett

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what assurance he has sought from the European Commission that legislation concerning the flammability of furniture and furnishings will meet the highest safety standards for British consumers.

Mr. Forth

The European Commission is engaged in discussions with member states about a proposed directive on the fire behaviour of furniture and furnishings. The Government will be consulting interested parties on the proposal in the near future.

We will press stongly for our requirement for ignition resistance of foam and other fillings at forthcoming meetings with the Commission and at parallel European standards meetings on the test standards.
