asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many recalled life sentence prisoners are currently in custody and how many of these were (a) convicted of a further offence and (b) recalled for other reasons.

According to the records held centrally, there were 110 recalled life sentence prisoners in prison service establishments in England and Wales on 30th September 1989. Thirty-four had been recalled following conviction of a further offence and 76 for other reasons.
