HC Deb 19 June 1990 vol 174 c516W
Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what steps he has taken to seek the views of the President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists on the procedure known as gamete intra fallopian transfer which may result in higher order multiple births; and what reply he has received.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

On 14 May I wrote to Sir George Pinker KCVO FRCOG FRCS (Ed) the President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. I am publishing as follows the text of my letter and of his reply of 15 June. This makes it clear that the council of the college does not favour the statutory regulation of such procedures. Instead, it proposes to issue professional guidance to fellows and members about procedures which may result in higher order multiple births once the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill is enacted.
