HL Deb 18 June 1990 vol 520 cc725-6WA
Lord Parry

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will confirm that the military rank of the commander in Wales will not be reduced from its present rank of major-general.

The Earl of Arran

The structure of United Kingdom land force districts is currently the subject of an internal review by the Commander in Chief United Kingdom Land Forces. It is expected that recommendations will be made to the Ministry of Defence and to Ministers later this year. It would therefore be premature to discuss any changes in the command structure that may be recommended.

Lord Parry

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether account will be taken of the wishes of the Welsh in deciding on any possible reorganisation of the structure of the army chain of command in the United Kingdom.

The Earl of Arran

The Ministry of Defence will indeed take account of the wishes of the Welsh people when it comes to consider the future structure of the army chain of command in the United Kingdom.

Lord Parry

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will confirm that, in the event of any reorganisation, the integrity of a headquarters for the army in Wales will be maintained.

The Earl of Arran

We do not expect proposals on the reorganisation of the army district structure in the United Kingdom until later this year and it would therefore be inappropriate to speculate on the changes that may be recommended.
